reflective narrative
Although quite the challenging course, JAPN312 was extremely focused on the practical use of business terminology and the cultural aspects that follow. We went over content such as the different types of bows and levels of respect each holds, the importance of business card exchanges, and the use of "cushion words". It was incredibly striking how particular Japanese business settings are compared to American business settings. Each week in this class, we went over a new set of kanji, watched videos and took quizzes, did 'role play' with our peers, and had class discussions on the week's topic. We also looked at practical aspects of business practice that also will help us with American jobs such as reviewing our resumes in English and creating one in a Japanese format as well as practicing how to write formal emails.
This class had three Japanese student T.A.s which was incredibly helpful, as many of the students in this class were at various levels of Japanese language skills and having native speakers with an idea of Japan's business culture was really eye-opening. The major assignments in this class included an individual presentation on a select country and its business mannerisms, oral interviews in which we were given situations and we would have to respond from memory, and a final presentation on a topic in Japanese business culture with a portion for Q&A. As I stated before, this was one of the more challenging courses I took at CSUMB, but it was a challenge that was much needed in preparation for my future living in Japan and working at a school. I hope with the words and mannerisms I learned from this class I can impress my future colleagues and learn more about Japanese business terms and behaviors.
