Reflective narrative
Prompt: Write a reflective statement for each of the following Major Learning Outcomes (MLO) supported by samples of your best work related to this MLO. Do not just list courses and what you learned from each course, but rather provide reflective narrative by describing connections to your learning related to the outcomes for each MLO. Note that each MLO has several outcomes.
Not just in HCOM322: Asian American Literature, but also in courses such as JAPN317: Pacific Food Empires and JAPN407: Japan in the Globalized Community, I learned so much about the cultures surrounding my already familiar knowledge with Japan and the United States. I have had opportunities to read novels that had a huge impact on me such as Pachinko by Min Jin Lee in FYS179: Myths and Realities of Asia. Through other novels in HCOM322 as well, I got to explore China and South Korea as well as the Philippines and Vietnam. In JAPN407, my global knowledge of China and South Korea particularly expanded, as we had a few months to dive into the history and modernity of each country. We explored art, films, and the development of language and culture with a global perspective. There are surely many similarities between countries like the United States, Japan, China, South Korea, etc., but the differences of each are incredibly important to be aware of. Not just historical aspects, but also current social efforts, perspectives on current issues, and much more.
